Always check before you build. Every bathroom, site, fixture and product is different. Before finalising any layout, measurement, height, clearance, spacing or fitting, you must:

• confirm all dimensions and clearances against your own space and your actual chosen fixtures and products (manufacturer specifications take priority over any general figure in this guide);
• engage appropriately licensed and qualified professionals (such as your builder, cabinetmaker, licensed plumber, licensed waterproofer and certified electrician) to design, measure, certify and install your bathroom; and
• ensure your bathroom complies with all applicable Australian Standards (including the wet-area waterproofing standard AS 3740), the National Construction Code, and any state, territory and local requirements and approvals.

Wet areas, electrical and plumbing. Bathrooms are wet areas with specific safety and compliance requirements. Waterproofing, plumbing and electrical work must be designed, carried out and certified by appropriately licensed professionals. Incorrect waterproofing, plumbing or electrical work can cause serious damage, safety hazards and compliance issues. Do not rely on the general figures in this guide for these works, they must be set and signed off by your licensed trades for your specific space.
